Simple, Natural Steps for Dealing with Chapped Skin
Drying and cracking of the skin occurs when the defense system in the skin is exhausted or impaired and the natural oils produced by the body are depleted and scarce. This makes the skin become very sore and uneven in complexion.
Drying of the skin can result from depleted natural fluids or oils and supplements must be used to replace these.
Neglecting the skin is the main reason for skin deterioration due to the elements.
Recurring contact with environmental factors like strong sunlight, extreme or intense cold may all be responsible for chapped skin. Simple steps like utilizing the protection provided by sun screens and lotions and wearing proper clothing can greatly minimize skin problems.
The origin of skin reactions can also be linked to soaps, various chemicals and even water when there is overly long exposure to it, or frequent use of it on a daily or regular basis – washing hands, washing dishes, etc.
Avoid Harsh Soaps and Chemicals
Harsh laundry detergents, or hard, harsh fabrics and tight-fitting clothing must be avoided and discarded. They can cause irritation to the skin. Wear loose and comfortable clothes made from natural fibers.
Physical abrasive actions and repeated irritation to a single area of the skin can also cause redness and soreness by chafing the skin. Using rubber gloves when cleaning or scrubbing with abrasives or harsh compounds can help avoid skin damage.
Using Supplements & Herbs to Handle Chapped Skin
Deficient levels of vitamins A, B and C or low and depleted amounts of the essential fatty acids can all lead to the appearance of dry and chapped skin.
The health and smoothness of the skin, along with an excellent complexion can be achieved using the oil of the evening primrose herb which is very rich in the essential fatty acids required by normal and healthy skin.
A deficiency of B complex vitamins is usually manifested as a persistent soreness or cracking skin in the lips of the patient. Another essential supplement is the very important nutrient vitamin A that promotes skin health.
Aloe Vera: Aloe vera is gentle and moisturizing. It also helps to remove dead skin cells. Apply aloe vera gel topically on troubled areas.
Calendula and comfrey have skin-softening properties. They can be used in a facial sauna or to make herbal or floral waters. Comfrey also reduces redness and soothes irritated skin.
Add five drops of lavender oil or oat extract to bath water. After the bath, apply diluted evening primrose oil.
Drink teas of chamomile, dandelion or peppermint.
Borage, fennel, coltsfoot or calendula tea also helps improve the skin. Add one tsp. of herbs to one cup of boiling water and drink daily.
Tea tree oil has been known to penetrate into the skin’s cellular level. Add one drop of oil to your favorite day or night cream to help moisturize and smooth skin.
